HISTORY: Ole Evinrude founded his company in 1907 in Wisconsin and was the first to produce an outboard that was commercially viable. It was reliable, easy to start and soon became a commercial success. This particular outboard is historically significant in that it was his second successful outboard motor design.

Designed in 1919 of aluminum it was lighter and produced more power.

The guy that first owned this would have come up from the lake to see the streets filled with Model T cars and horse drawn carriages. The Model A wouldn’t come along for another 2 years!

It’s called ELTO because Mr. Evinrude sold his half of the company to his business partner and with the sale went the rights to use his name. Thus, coming back into the business he chose the name ELTO which stood for Evinrude Light Twin Outboard.

You can see in the design that outboards were rudimentary back then. For example, you steer it just as you would a horse with bridle. You steer by pulling a rope tied on to the right and left steering arm at the top of the rudder arm.

Mr. Evinrude did rejoin his old company taking the role of president. Until that time, he made outboards under the ELTO name.

PREVIOUS OWNER’S AD: Let me start by saying, when I acquired this outboard I decided not to put gasoline in it as it was to be displayed in my residence and I didn’t want the smell of gasoline. The previous owner, who had quite the collection said he did the same.

The previous owner’s ad said this of the motor:

Putting this RESTORED 1926 outboard motor up for adoption. Motor has been polished, nickle plated and mechanically rebuilt. Coil has been reworked but I have never tried to start it. The Rudder Twin has a 6 volt ignition coil that runs off a 6 volt DC battery (no charging system). This is a 2 cylinder motor, about 4 hp. There is no water pump, the propeller is hollow and cooling water is blown through the rudder and up into the engine to cool it. This motor is in excellent condition and looks fantastic. Would be a great decoration piece for the cottage, cabin or man cave or just put it on an old wooden rowboat and USE it.

I won’t warrant what the previous owner said about the motor, but that was what his ad said.

Clearly, this motor is in near perfect condition considering it’s almost 100 years old. The motor is handsomely displayed and ready to be a part of your collection. Find one if you can that’s nickel plated and in the shape this one is in. This is a true display piece.

I suspect that this would be an award winning motor should you take it to a vintage wooden boat and outboard meet. I’ve not seen one in this condition or this handsomely displayed. The display was purposely designed to look as if from a summer camp on a lake somewhere.

Note: The motor had a cracked propeller which broke off completely, it can be tack welded on the backside or taken off and replaced. I used a metal tape on it, as you can see it’s very hard to spot.
