Southern California car: 1972 BMW 2002tii with 4 speed manual transmission. Round tail lights.
Engine suddenly lost compression in one cylinder while under acceleration. The car sat for many years before the car was towed to a BMW 2002 repair shop to be rebuilt. The engine compartment was professionally painted by a nearby body and paint shop with matching original factory numbered malaga color paint, and new decals installed, this when the engine was pulled and completely rebuilt at the BMW shop which specializes in the BMW 2002’s.
After the rebuild it was driven to a tire shop for decent treads to be able to test drive the car, and in total it was driven approx 36 miles to where it sits now. The engine has never been broken-in as the test drive on the freeway indicated the engine had very little power due to fuel starvation. The car was stored for several more years before work on the fuel system commenced.
The original pump was replaced with an aftermarket pump as it failed to deliver, after a new pump was installed; we found one injector was not functioning. After cleaning the injector pump, lines and injectors, and adjusting all linkage, it ran very well while driving it around our block and up a hill. However the ignition was apparently left on overnight, so that the very next day, upon starting the engine, a cylinder hydrolocked as a dripping injector partially filled a cylinder with gasoline. We are out of time with this vehicle and are selling it as is. This engine will at minimum -no doubt- need a new head. (This engine never overheated, only severe hydrolock damage occurred.) Leak down test confirms combustion cylinder leakage to coolant.
Other Notes:
An aftermarket fuel pump was installed, but needs one more vibration dampening suspension ring. (A small rubber ring.)
Body is as I bought it, has some minor damage to the passenger side front fender. The small chrome strip on the Driver side front fender is missing, and overall the car has the same inexpensive purple paint job over the original malaga color that came when I purchased the car.
Original transmission worked well but is noisy in first gear. (I was planning to upgrade to a 5 speed.)
It has the original sunroof but is stuck and will not open.
Trunk has the typical rust-out hole in the spare tire wheel well which was there when I bought it. A cover I used for that hole was dislodged allowing a rodent to enter that made a hole in the back seat.
Front Recaro seats need upholstering.
Screws for the front steering wheel cover are missing, and the cover is taped on.
One rear license plate lamp cover is missing.
I believe I am the third owner of this vehicle I purchased 25 years ago.
Pink slip in hand as the car is registered in my name.
Posting for interest. Planning to put this up for bid in “Bring-a-Trailer” soon.
Also will be putting up a ’61 Triumph TR3 in need of complete restoration.
(No help is needed in selling.)
